What is EIFS?
Exterior Insulation Finish System -in short EIFS
How is it applied? – EIFS application in New Construction begins after the framing and application of exterior OSB or other sheathing material is adhered, to enclose the exterior of the house or building.
In using EIFS the first step is applying a moisture barrier or House Wrap over the OSB preferable Tyvek or other like material, for moisture drainage and protection.
Second step is then to apply EPS or Expanded Polystyrene (Styrofoam) typically 1 1/2″ thick sanded and molded to specifications. This also increases the R- value for insulation of home or office, which has an impact on bettering the cost of utilities for cooling and heating.
Third step is to apply a Base-coat of adhesive mud 1/8″ thick with fiberglass reinforced mesh embedded.
Finally is to apply a Finish Coat and Texture. Finish coats can use any color to match stone, brick, siding, roof, etc.
Finish Textures include:
- Semi Smooth (best for small areas and trim)
- Med Sand (great for trim)
- Medium Worm (commercial favorite)
- Free Style (our personal favorite)
